Andre Sanvelian (N/A)
Birthplace/Origin: N/A
Biography/Statement:
Andre Sanvelian was a French artist who lived in the Butte aux Cailles Neighborhood in Paris. He had a small studio at 10 Villa Daviel in the early part of the 20th Century. With its narrow cobblestone streets harboring quirky, cafes and boutiques and its art deco architectural heritage, it was a great place for him to paint and get inspiration.
While living in this neighborhood he became friends with other painters including Élisée Maclet who became very influential in his career. Traveling outside of Paris he painted many areas including the south east region of France known as The Alpes-Maritimes or the Côte d’Azur.
Here he was introduced to Henri Matisse. Clearly this introduction changed Sanvelian, and is earlier method of painting. His bold use of color and texture became a huge part of his landscape painting.
