Yates lived in Auburn, New York, where he painted local views in the Finger Lakes area of New York state. He is also known for sweeping Western panoramas, scenes of New York City, and a Battle of Gettysburg painting bought by the 1881 encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic and presented to the Soldiers Home in Bath, New York, in that year.
