Edward Avedisian (1936-2007) American

Medium: Oil on canvas
Image Size: 34” x 57”
Signature: Signed verso
Price: $2800
Biography/Statement
In the 1960’s, Edward Avedisian was one of the youngest of those luminaries producing a grand new abstract painting. Shown first at Ivan Karp and Dick Bellamy’s Hansa Gallery and then at Robert Elkon, Avedisian’s insouciant mix of pop playfulness, color field cool and high formalist style put his art in a unique, and at the time generously rewarded, position. Paintings made it onto the cover of Artforum, were purchased by all the major museums, were among the few abstract works shown as representative of America’s post-war achievement at Expo 67 in Montreal and comprised a cornerstone in histories of the period written by Barbara Rose, among others.
Yet, Avedisian left New York in the mid-1970’s, moving upstate along the Hudson River, severing his exhibition ties. Had Avedisian merely left New York City to establish his studio in a quieter place once his position was secure, had he continued to develop the abstraction for which he became known, then this would be just another permutation of the life lived by many successful artists of his generation. But, as the new paintings indicate, Avedisian’s break was far more deeply expressed.
Over the past twenty years Avedisian has developed a new style: figurative, ostensibly naive, contentious. The world Avedisian paints is that of his upstate environs and he does so with a disarming directness. At the core of his new paintings lay a furtive sense of narrative: tow pick-ups are parked beside a farmhouse, a couple repose behind roadside billboards, men work on their trucks. Avedisian, always contemporary, has evolved into a different kind of American painter.

Rolph Scarlett (1889-1984) American, American/Canadian

Medium: Gouache on paper
Image Size: 11” x 15”
Signature: Signed lower right
Price: $2800
Biography/Statement
Rolph Scarlett was a painter of geometric abstraction during the American avant-garde movement of the 1930s and 1940s.
Born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada in 1889, he left Canada at the age of 18 to go to New York City and returned to Canada during the years of World War I. However, by 1924 he had established New York City as his home. While he was beginning his career as an abstract painter, he was designing stage scenery for George Bernard Shaw’s play, Man and Superman and for the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.
In 1939, while in the process of creating the Museum of Non-Objective Painting (later the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum), Director Hilla Rebay began to take an interest in Scarlett’s work. By 1940 he had become the new museum’s chief lecturer.
By 1953, the Guggenheim owned nearly sixty of his paintings and monoprints. He later became a resident of the Woodstock art colony for more than twenty-five years and showed his work in various Woodstock exhibits.

Frame Size: 56” x 76”
Signature: Signed verso
Price: $6500
Biography/Statement
Audrey Code was born in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Italian and Irish second generation parents. Audrey was copying comics at age 6 and went to art school at age 10, taking Saturday classes at the Carnegie Museum. Memories of the blast furnaces’ flaming reflections in the river at night made a huge impression on her.
Later in her formative years, Code studied with Balcomb Greene and Samuel Rosenburg at Carnegie Mellon University while gaining her BFA in Painting. She went on to study painting with Leo Manso and Victor Candel at a Provincetown workshop in 1961. There she met many artists including Alan Kleiman, who later became her husband in 1963. The following year, Code moved to New York City to be with Kleiman and further her artistic career.
During the 70’s and 80’s, much of her work was influenced by natural phenomena (Carl Sagan’s Nova Programs on PBS specifically) as well as paintings from the Renaissance era.
Some notable accomplishments include the following…. In 1981 Audrey was awarded the CAPS award by the New York Council of the Arts. In the 1990’s, Code appeared on PBS with Neil Grayson discussing her work featured at the Dactyl Foundation in Soho, NYC.
Recent exhibits of Code’s include Women: Diverse Interludes at Andre Zarre Gallery in Chelsea in August 2009 and Grand Gestures at the Broome Street Gallery in October 2009.
