Biography/Statement
Little is known of Charles Burleigh; he was born in Brighton in 1869, the third and only son of four children. His parents seem to have kept a small private school for 30 boys from 6 to 15, which Charles Burleigh probably also attended. He trained at Brighton School of Art, and then in Paris, under Jacques-Emile Blanche; this appears to be the only period of his life when he lived elsewhere than in Brighton or Hove. The censuses record that he was still living at home with his elderly parents at the age of 22, but by 1901, when he was 33, he was boarding in Shoreham, Hove. Between this census and the next, in 1911, he had married Averil Dell, also an artist, of Hassocks in Sussex, and they were living together in Hove. Charles was 15 years older than his wife, and may possibly have met her at Brighton School of Art, if – as is probable – he supplemented his income by teaching there. Apparently they may have married rapidly and early, when Averil was 20 or 22, since planning permission for a family house in Hove was granted in 1903, and built in 1905 (see the item on the history of Burleigh’s painting of his family in the Geffrye Museum). It contained a purpose-built studio for husband and wife to share, and Charles painted his wife – also painting – in the huge bay window in 1940 (Brighton Museums & Art Galleries).
He is known for his depictions of interiors, including those in public places – such as two more belonging to Brighton Museums & Art Galleries, which show the Music Room of Brighton Pavilion and the Dome in use as military hospitals during the First World War. He was also a landscapist and a painter of urban scenes. Charles Burleigh was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI). He exhibited both at the exhibitions of these institutions, and at the Royal Academy and the Fine Art Society. His wife, Averil, also exhibited at the RA and the ROI, under the name of Averil Burleigh, as did his daughter, Veronica (b.1909).
His son, Duncan, unfortunately developed an unnamed illness at the age of 18, and Averil Burleigh became seriously ill in the late 1940s. The Burleigh family taking tea in a room overlooking a garden at Wilbury Crescent, Hove, c.1947 (Geffrye Museum), although superficially a sunlit scene of domestic intimacy, records this sombre aspect to their lives; two years later Averil was dead.
Works in public collections include: Brighton Front, c.1920, Portrait of an organist, 1921, The Music Room of the Royal Pavilion, c.1923-4, Brighton Arts Club, c.1930, Lieut. Col. S. Moens, Portrait of an old man (all Brighton Museums & Art Galleries); plus works in The Slade & UCL, London, and in other provincial art galleries.

Biography/Statement
Born in Lewis County, New York in the Adirondack Mountains, he earned a reputation for painting still lifes in landscape, although he began his career painting only the landscape. His still lifes were of two types, either arrangements placed in the landscape or close-ups of fruit growing on trees or falling out of baskets.
He was raised on a farm from where he painted the mountain landscape of Lewis County and also painted in the vicinity of Buffalo and Syracuse. In 1883, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he worked as a carpenter, frame- maker, and art teacher and also began painting still lifes objects, something that by 1894, he focused on exclusively, especially highly polished and well defined apples.
He left Brooklyn in 1903, and from that time, little is known except that his obituary was in the Philadelphia newspapers in 1935.

Biography/Statement
A painter with a long and productive career, Leon Dabo was known for his atmospheric, tonalist paintings, especially of the Hudson and East rivers in New York City in early morning and sunset times of day—“silent, introspective times of day that appealed to the Tonalist sensibility. . . he emphasized gentle nuances of light and atmosphere, luminous color effects, and an innovative handling of space”. (Lowrey 124) Dabo also painted floral still lifes, and in the 1920s became a lecturer on art education and on specific artists including John La Farge and James Whistler.
Newly discovered research, verified by gallery owner and art historian, Frank Goss has shown that Leon Dabo was born in France in 1864 and not as previously thought in Detroit in 1868. His father was Ignace Scott, an artist specializing in architectural decoration. Dabo grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and was an apprentice to his father before going to New York City, where he worked for J. & R. Lamb studios and associated with John La Farge, painter and muralist.
In 1886, Dabo went to Paris where, using letters of introduction provided by La Farge, met leading artists. He studied with Daniel Vierge and Pierre Galland, and at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He also went to Italy and London, where it is thought he spent time with James Mc Neill Whistler in his studio. In subsequent paintings, Dabo reflected Whistler’s influence including his philosophy of ‘art for art’s sake’, his tonalist style, and his use of a monogram as a signature. Dabo later considered himself an expert on documenting Whistler’s paintings, as did others, and Dabo became an authenticator and published writer work by Whistler.
In 1892, Dabo returned to New York City. He took up his former career of architectural decorator and muralist of public and religious buildings. He also painted river scenes, initially working in an inhibited-seeming academic manner but then loosening up in what was then regarded as modernist influences. Among those artists whose work had an effect on him in addition to Whistler were French Impressionists and Japanese painters such as Hiroshige and Hokusai.
Dabo’s painting career ascended in 1905, when the National Arts Club, of which he was a member, sponsored a solo exhibition of his work, which critics generally praised and which brought him public attention. Prominent collector and Tonalist enthusiast William T. Evans purchased some of Dabo’s paintings, which conveyed special distinction. In 1910, he participated in the “Independents” exhibit organized by The Eight in New York City, and in 1913, as a member of The Society of Painters and Sculptors, was one of the principle organizers of the New York City Armory Show that introduced modernist art from Europe to the United States.
He was a member of the National Academy of Design, Scholastic Art League and Brooklyn Society of Artists. In 1917, Dabo was commissioned and sent to France in the A.E.F. Corps of Interpreters. In France he also received the Chevalier Legion of Honor award.
The New York Times in it’s review of his Floral Etudes, drawings, and Pastels at M. Knoedler Company, New York City in 1933, wrote: “A distinct contribution to be associated with the flower harmonies of Odilon Redon and of Fantin-Latour.”

Medium: Oil on Board
Image Size: 6” x 8”
Frame Size: 10” x 12”

Price: $900
Biography/Statement
Leslie Gabosh has been a working artist for over 40 years, painting still life as well as designing and fabricating jewelry. As a painter, her inspiration has been the 17th century and 18th century Dutch and Flemish paintings of the Golden Age, Spanish paintings of the 18th century, and the 19th century American painters. “My subjects are the incidentals of daily life. When I study the paintings of Adriaen Coorte, Willem van Aelst, and Luis Melendez, I see similar concerns and delights.”
Gabosh also enjoys the addition of contemporary subjects that add a whimsical touch and resonate with her aesthetic sensibility. Historically, translucence and luminosity of natural objects have appealed to artists and viewers; they relay a sense of tranquility and serenity that cancels out the noise of everyday chaos. A moment of quiet reflection can produce a calm and meditative perspective on these ordinary and highly recognizable objects.
“My work is painted from life with intentionally organized and illuminated arrangements. Some objects come from my own garden where I have a deep and long-standing relationship with my trees and plants. These small-format panels catch the eye from across the room and compel the viewer to move closer. Although these are unremarkable objects, they are a pathway to thoughts and memories, and a window into the world of the artists who inspire me.”
