Biography/Statement

Self-taught artist Levi Wells Prentice is best known for his realistic still-life compositions of fruit arranged within a landscape, or abundantly spilling from bushel baskets.  Early in his career, he painted portraits and landscapes of the Adirondack Mountain region of Lewis County, New York, where Prentice was born in 1851.

Prentice later turned to painting still-life subjects when he moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1883.  He was a member of the Brooklyn Art Association and frequently exhibited his paintings there.  In addition to his artistic talents, Prentice also designed his own frames and made his own brushes and palettes.

Prentice’s fruit still lifes are compositions are intended to create dramatic contrasts.  The shift between dark background areas and the vibrant hues of the fruit are done to give the compositions an exciting, visual energy.  The fruit is presented with clarity and precision.  An emphasis is placed on the idea of man vs. nature.  The wooden baskets with hand wrought nails represents a structured, man-made object, while the overly ripe fruit represents the fleeting qualities of nature.

These paintings also demonstrate Prentice’s remarkable skills at rendering color, form, and texture. Noted art historian, William H. Gerdts observed: “there are several works by Prentice in which he achieves a quality of illusionism which is unsurpassed.” (1)

In 1993, the skillful ‘illusionism’ of Levi Wells Prentice was celebrated in a retrospective exhibition at the Adirondack Museum in New York.  His works continue to receive a high degree of appreciation by collectors today. His works are represented in many museums including the New York State Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Montclair Art Museum, Philbrook Museum of Art and Yale University Art Gallery.

Price: $3800

Biography/Statement

Greg English has a natural eye for light source and believes knowing “how to blend light and shadow” is the key to drawing the observer into his paintings.

Viewing Greg’s work one would never believe that has had no formal training. His passion for detail and realism surfaces around the age of 10 as he drew and sketched everything that caught his eye.

Today, trained by experience and natural ability, Greg English’s oil paintings of Native American pottery, as well as his pencil drawings of a variety of subjects, are examples of conviction, understanding and dedication of both interpretation and realism.

Raised in Arizona, but born in Illinois, Greg has always been exposed to art and creativity. His mother is the famed Cheryl English, and oil color artist showing in galleries throughout the Southwest, as well as numerous shows around the country and in Japan. Joel English, Greg’s father, ran his own award winning advertising agency in Phoenix for 15 years.

In May of 1998, Greg participated in the Phippen Memorial Art Show in Prescott, AZ where he captures a 2nd place prize in “oils” and a 3rd place prize in “People’s Choice Award”.

Robert Spear Dunning (1829-1905) American

Robert

Medium: Oil on Canvas
Image Size: 12” x 16”
Frame Size: 20” x 24”
Signature: Signed and dated 1889 verso
Price: SOLD

Biography/Statement

Robert Spear Dunning was a founder in Massachusetts of the Fall River School*, which emphasized still life paintings.  He painted portraits and landscapes, but in 1865, his interest turned to still-life painting, which brought him notice and critical acclaim.

His highly realistic or “trompe l’oeil”* paintings usually had one or more prominent large objects such as a silver pitcher with luscious looking fruit on a highly polished table.  His early work was dark in color and tone, and later ones were luminous*.

Born in 1829 in Brunswick, Maine, Dunning was brought to Fall River, a wealthy mill town, at age five and educated in the public schools.  He became an art student of James Roberts, and then followed a well-trodden path to the National Academy of Design* in New York City.  At the Academy, he studied under Daniel Huntington, focusing on figure and portrait painting.

Dunning’s pictures were exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1850 to 1880, and at the American Art Union* in 1850, as well as the Boston Art Club* and in local exhibitions.

In 1870, Dunning and friend John E. Grouard founded The Fall River Evening Drawing School, which was quite remarkable in a town that had little formal cultural life.  No other town in the late 19th century is so associated with still life painting. All of his students are painters of still lifes and include Bryant Chapin, Franklin H. Miller, Albert F. Monroe, Abbie Luella Zuill, and Herbert Cash.
